Florida Convention 2011 was a time for many firsts and not just in Awards. The first Talent Show, the first entries in some new awards, the first formal dance with ladies looking gorgeous in long gowns, the first time some have seen Manatee, the first convention t-shirt with the Florida rally cheer on it, the first iCivitan workshop, the first time all Awards entries were emailed instead of mailed, the first time we collected a list of where graduates will attend college, the first workshop on starting a Junior Civitan Club, the first workshop on starting a Campus Club with a YouTube video (led by USF Founding President Jarryd Boyd). Saying goodbye was hard but all have plans to attend the International Junior Civitan Convention in Birmingham Alabama June 23-26 2011

Friday and Saturday Dance, Social and Games were a hit.....very few Juniors made it to the end.... they were exhausted! The Florida District Junior Civitan Board of Directors, led by Junior Governor Matthew, took care of decorations and led the games and music. Civitans joined in the fun too and were also tired out early after a day of workshops and sharing.
Getting ready for the next game, some had not even put their luggage into their room Friday night, so they would not miss a minute of the social time.
10 Junior Civitan banners decorated the front of the workshop seminar room Saturday and Sunday. Florida Junior Civitan Governor Matthew Pendleton made sure everyone had a workbook containing all the exercises, brainstorming paper, planning sheets and a copy of all the workshop slides for: Project Planning, Marketing, Working with the Media, Project Management and Public Speaking tips. All in attendance said on the evaluations form they had learned from the Workshops and had suggestions for the next workshop series. Governor Matthew also presented each Junior Club and each Civitan Club with a CD of the Florida Media database so every Club can send News Release and PSA to media.
The 2010-2011 Florida Junior Civitan Board of Directors were elected Saturday and Installed at the Awards & Installation Banquet Saturday night by incoming Civitan International President, Gay Aaron. L to R: Junior Governor Zachary Rivera, Deputy Governor, Judy Hernandez, Secretary Sandra Gabriel, Historian Samantha McCluskey, Lt. Governor Tallahassee Georgia Mergenthol, Lt. Governor, Jacksonville Leila Estevz, Lt. Governor Orlando, David Serrao, Lt. Governor Tampa/St. Pete, Nate Collard.
For the first time the Florida Junior Civitans completed a Service Project at the convention. During the entire event Junior Civitans could make a card of thanks for US Forces posted overseas and local Police and Fire personel who risk their lives everyday to keep us safe. This service project was so popular that International Director Kristen Cornwell told all the International Board who asked Florida Junior Governor Matthew to set it up again at the International Junior Civitan convention in Jacksonville on June 24 - 27 and also set up a table where Juniors can make cards to cheer up Children in Hospital. Consider it done! We are ready for visiting Junior Civitans to do these 3 Service Projects in Jacksonville. See you there !!!
Sunday morning everyone wore their Florida District Convention T-shirt with the "Be a NO PHONE Driver" logo on the back of the shirt. Each Club was given a banner patch with the "Be a NO PHONE Driver" logo. Both the convention t-shirt and banner patch were a surprise, orchestrated by Junior Governor Matthew. This campaign to save lives has received media exposure in newspaper, TV and on radio. It has also spread to other states. Bishop Moore Junior Civitans made a fantastic video and posted it on YouTube. Many radio stations made a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to play 24/7 at no cost to Junior Civitan. Media support has been amazing. Bishop Moore Juniors collected 300 pledge signatures and gave a pen with the campaign title to each. Some Advisors told their Junior Civitans they cannot put the banner patch on their banner until they all pledge to Be a NO PHONE Driver. Civitans are feeling some pressure to pledge not to use their cell phone while driving!
